No longer may we swing our fists regardless of whose nose might be in the way. In everything we do we must now be mindful of the lives of others, cautious, constrained, meticulous. We may no longer live in the moment, as if there were no tomorrow. This is a meeting about chemicals: the greenhouse gases insulating the atmosphere. But it is also a battle between two world views. The angry men who seek to derail this agreement, and all such limits on their self-fulfilment, have understood this better than we have. A new movement, most visible in North America and Australia, but now apparent everywhere, demands to trample on the lives of others as if this were a human right. It will not be constrained by taxes, gun laws, regulations, health and safety, especially by environmental restraints. It knows that fossil fuels have granted the universal ape amplification beyond its Palaeolithic dreams. For a moment, a marvellous, frontier moment, they allowed us to live in blissful mindlessness. The angry men know that this golden age has gone; but they cannot find the words for the constraints they hate. Clutching their copies of Atlas Shrugged, they flail around, accusing those who would impede them of communism, fascism, religiosity, misanthropy, but knowing at heart that these restrictions are driven by something far more repulsive to the unrestrained man: the decencies we owe to other human beings.”

- This Is Bigger Than Climate Change.
The lecture, which will be held in St George’s Church, Mappin Street, will address important issues and questions regarding vaccines that are often left unanswered. Since the MMR scare, vaccines have been misunderstood by the general public and recent vaccines for swine flu and cervical cancer have been major news stories in the media. The public often received confused messages from this coverage and experts who are recommending vaccines.

The aim of the lecture, which will be presented by vaccine expert, Professor Adam Finn from the University of Bristol, is to educate the general public about vaccines. They will address the origins and development of vaccines, so that the public can make more knowledgeable decisions in the future and learn to look objectively at the information they receive.

"You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him suck your cock."

“You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him suck your cock.”

- Pat Condell

"Zombie arguments survive, immortal and resistant to all refutation, because they do not live or die..."

“Zombie arguments survive, immortal and resistant to all refutation, because they do not live or die by the normal standards of mortal arguments. There’s a huge list of them at realclimate.org, with refutations. There are huge lists of them everywhere. It makes no difference. “CO2 isn’t an important greenhouse gas”, “Global warming is down to the sun”, “what about the cooling in the 1940s?” says your party bore. “Well,” you reply, “since the last time you raised this, I checked, and there were loads of sulphites in the air in the 1940s to block out the sun, made from the slightly different kind of industrial pollution we had then, and the odd volcano, so that’s been answered already, ages ago.” And they knew that. And you know they knew you could find out, but they went ahead anyway and wasted your time, and worse than that, you both know they’re going to do it again, to some other poor sap. But it never addresses the fact that many come with high hopes of a new life, and find reality bitterly dispiriting. They come to take advantage of social mobility and a law-abiding society to build a better life for their families. They end up feeling they need to protect their families from the very society they had idolised. Why don’t they go home? Many people I met from more stable parts of the world talked about it “after saving enough”. But like others before them, chances are that they will stay. People who had come with a fantasy of Britain ended just seeing it as an opportunity to earn and a contagion to avoid.”

- Preventing Terrorism at Home - The View from Ground Zero | Center for a New American Security

The Murdochs want to control the misinformation superhighway.

The Murdochs want to control the misinformation superhighway.

New Statesman - Cannibals apologise

New Statesman - Cannibals apologise:
Of all the apologies to have to make, surely one of the most awkward must be over the small matter of having eaten someone’s great-great-grandfather.
